Do You Understand Now?- A Piece by Sarah Daghigh

Do you understand now?

Everyone wants you to think they know, that makes them sound relatable, like they understand that you’re not one. Or the other really- but I said I’m both. You’re not allowed to be both. Well, why not? How can I not be both, while you say I’m not allowed to be either? I am of both my father and my mother I am, the blend of two cultures, two smells, two skins . Shouldn’t that make me stronger? Why would you say I am washed, a mere diluted version of both my flags. If I can’t be either, let me be both.
