An Intro to a New Column- Mei Millie
Hi! My name is Millie. I am a new writer for Mixed Life Media and am proudly Eurasian. I am
a 20-year-old college student living in the UK and studying Japanese. Being bilingual in both
English and Mandarin, languages are my passion and I hope to learn as many as possible!
So, what exactly drew me towards Mixed Life Media and made me want to be a part of the
team? Well, it’s exactly what I have been looking for for a very long time- a platform where
the ever-growing mixed community can express their thoughts, feelings or frustrations
about anything they want. As a child, growing up in the cultural melting-pot of London was a
great experience. However, when I moved to Taiwan for a year at the age of 7, I suddenly
found myself getting stared at, bullied and excluded, just for being different. That was the
first time I ever questioned my identity and who I was. However, after getting old enough to
be able to work, I found myself once again questioning who exactly I was. Working at a pub,
I had to face and communicate with many customers. Most of them were fine, but it was
the few who would feel entitled enough to tell me that I wasn’t British but “Chinese, Thai,
Japanese, Asian or just not British” who made the biggest impression. It wasn’t just Taiwan
where I wasn’t accepted but now even British people were making me feel like a foreigner
in my own country. That made me realise, where do I even belong then? Do I even have
some place to call home? But then, I realised, it’s not that I don’t belong anywhere, I belong
everywhere. I don’t have no homes but two places which I can call home. Why is it that
people can be so narrow-minded without of thinking of the bigger picture? So here I am to
help spread the word that we are mixed and proud. We are citizens of the World.
