Mixed Artist Spotlight: Jenni Rudolph "Water and Oil"
Jenni Rudolph is a mixed Chinese/Russian-Jewish songwriter and musician. Her music slides gracefully between R and B and smooth pop and can be found on almost all platforms. She strives to fuse honest yet thoughtful lyrics with contagious grooves and melodies inspired by retro R&B, funk, and soul. She writes to empower, to better represent in popular music the diverse and multifaceted identity of women, and to explore emotional and societal dualities.
In 2019, she wrote “Water & Oil” (attached below), finally confronting the complexities of her multiracial experience. The song addresses themes of duality, belonging, tokenism, objectification, beauty standards, stereotypes, and ultimately, the journey of self-acceptance.
She writes about her album Reignite that, “2018 was a rough year for me, creatively. Music had become the source of my stress and insecurities, not the cure. I felt disengaged with the people around me and disconnected from my purpose. Since age seven, songwriting was the core of my identity, so to withdraw from it made me feel broken and useless. Through twelve uninspiring months, somehow these 10 songs were born, "reigniting" my passion for music and my hope for a creative future. I was able to explore writing with and for other voices, not confined to any one genre, and with a purpose - striving to connect with listeners and make them feel "reignited" - in their confidence, motivation, and courage, just as this album did for me…”
